As a public university, UC San Diego admits California residents as a majority of each year's entering class. We also admit hundreds of other students from all over the country and around the world.
Admission is highly competitive because we receive many more applications than we have room for. All applicants must exceed the University of California's minimum eligibility requirements. If you're an exceptional student, we encourage you to apply, no matter where you live.
Out-of-state applicants go through the same review processes as applicants from California:

As you review the costs of attending UC San Diego, you'll see additional tuition charges for students whose permanent residence is not in the State of California. The Registrar's Office has more information on California residence for fees and tuition.
The financial independence requirement makes it extremely difficult for most undergraduate students whose parents are not California residents to qualify for classification as a resident at the University of California. This includes students from community colleges and other post-secondary institutions within California.

We have 300 days of fantastic weather a year on our tree-filled campus on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can enjoy casual team sports, competitive athletics, or even studying in the sun. And surfing – do it seriously, just for fun, or take the Physics of Surfing class.
